Who are we?
We’re Carmen Vega, a proud Bolivian teacher passionate about sharing her language and culture, and Jacques Chenal, a Franco-Bolivian educator with a love for meaningful learning experiences.
In 2009, we combined our strengths — Carmen’s decades of teaching Spanish (since 1995) and Jacques’s educational background — to create the Carmen Vega Spanish School, a place where learning Spanish means connection, discovery, and personal growth.
A big family
Over the years, the Carmen Vega Spanish School has grown into a big family — a vibrant community made up of our teachers, students from all over the world, host families, and local partners.
Each person who joins us brings their own story, culture, and energy, adding a new color to our shared experience. What connects us all is the same spirit of warmth, curiosity, and mutual support.
Here, learning Spanish goes far beyond the classroom — it’s about sharing life together, exchanging cultures, and creating lasting bonds that often turn into lifelong friendships.
A people-centered school
Our philosophy is simple: people come first. Every student is unique — with their own story, goals, and learning rhythm. That’s why our classes are small, personal, and adapted to your needs.
Our teachers take the time to get to know you, understand how you learn best, and create a warm environment where you feel comfortable speaking and making mistakes. Because that’s how real learning happens — through connection, empathy, and joy.
Professional Spanish courses
Our courses combine a solid academic foundation with a practical, communicative approach.
All our teachers are qualified in linguistics and experienced in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. We focus on conversation and real-life use of the language while still giving you the grammar tools you need to express yourself with confidence. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an advanced learner, our personalized method helps you progress quickly — and enjoy every moment of it.
A community-focused project
Carmen Vega is not just a place to learn Spanish — it’s a project rooted in community values.
We collaborate with local organizations and offer volunteer opportunities to our students who wish to give back while learning. By choosing our school, you’re also supporting local families, teachers, and initiatives that promote cultural exchange and solidarity. Learning Spanish here means becoming part of something bigger — a living bridge between cultures.
Spanish classes in the middle of the garden
Each Spanish class takes place in different rooms decorated with typical Bolivian elements. Thanks to Cochabamba’s spring-like climate, classes are often held on the terrace or in the garden, surrounded by the household animals (turtle, dogs, cats, hummingbirds…). During breaks, everyone gathers for tea and snacks, continuing to practice Spanish while avoiding other languages.
