I already had previous Spanish experience but my time here really helped correct some of the mistakes I was making, and review a lot of grammar points. They have excellent teachers which you rotate each day; I found this helpful to get different perspectives on Spanish and Bolivian culture. Each day was a mix of casual conversation and the actual lesson material. I appreciated that they have their own curriculum, as many of their texts give insights into Bolivia and Cochabamba. The school offers the opportunity to live with a host family, which is a great way to experience how a local Bolivian family lives. I made friends with the other students and we often hung out outside of class, going on hikes or taking bachata classes together. Also there’s a menagerie of dogs, cats, and even a tortoise in their garden area. And Cochabamba is just an awesome city to spend time in. It’s the culinary capital of Bolivia. Plus you can also learn bachata and charango while you’re in town. I signed up for one week of classes and ended up staying for four. Vine aquí para aprender un poco de español durante dos semanas, pero al final me quedé en la escuela cinco semanas porque me encantó muchísimo. Buscaba una escuela, pero encontré amigos y una segunda familia con el alojamiento en casa de familia. Très bonne école de langue, nous débutons en espagnol et en deux semaines nous avons pu acquérir les bases et gagner en aisance à l’oral, ce qui est très important lors d’un voyage. L'école Carmen Vega est un vrai petit havre de paix, durant deux semaines nous avons eu la chance de prendre des cours d'espagnol au sein de cette école. La pédagogie est au top et tout les professeur.es sont vraiment géniaux. Au coeur du jardin ou en dans la famille d'accueil, avec qui l'école peut te mettre en relation, nous nous sommes nettement améliorées en tant que débutantes. Les cours peuvent être adaptés selon ton emploi du temps, mais surtout en fonction de ton niveau et de la durée de ton passage à Cochabamba. I quickly got over my major hurdle - fear - with the teachers’ gentle prodding. I moved through the excellent program at my own pace and gained the confidence to use the language all the time. The daily rotation of teachers keeps every lesson fresh and new. The communication between teachers ensured continuity and a focus on what I wanted from the program. Every single teacher was outstanding. I feel like I should be writing this review in Spanish, because we only spoke Spanish when I was there, and that is part of the magic. But I’m writing this for those who haven’t been yet, and might not be able to read a review en español (you will after you go). I left the US for Bolivia with the express purpose of learning to speak Spanish - not just take classes and do lessons - but actually hearing and speaking the language all the time. And that is what I did there for three weeks (I wish it could have been longer). I actually started to think and dream in Spanish. And now that I’m back home, I am still using it. Carmen’s method really works. The school is warm and welcoming and located in the most charming garden setting in a lovely, safe residential barrio. I highly recommend a home stay to enhance the experience. All of the hosts are a close part of the program who know how to welcome and feed guests, help them learn to speak Spanish, and guide them around everything you will want to know about the city. If you’re lucky they’ll take you to a party. Cochabamba is the perfect place to learn the language. People are kind and eager to engage. I felt safe everywhere and loved the lack of tourists and need to try to speak Spanish everywhere all the time. And Bolivia. What an enchanting country. You will definitely want to go back for more. J'ai passé de très bon moments dans cette école de langue. Chaque jour j'avais cours avec un professeur différent ce qui permet de ne pas s'ennuyer. Tous sont plus sympathiques les uns que les autres et c'est grâce à eux que j'ai pu progresser si rapidement. Le cadre est agréable et l'ambiance familiale. Je recommande fortement à tous ceux qui veulent accélérer leur apprentissage de l'espagnol tout en en apprenant plus sur la culture de Bolivie. I thought I'd be there for a week, but stayed for two months. Escuela Carmen Vega is a great place to learn Spanish and enjoy my favorite hidden gem of a city in Bolivia. I recommend staying with one of the wonderful local families for more immersion. Thanks to Carmen and all the wonderful staff and for making my time there memorable. 🙏
