Learn Spanish Faster: Llevar vs. Traer

🧳 Llevar or traer? Never mix up these two Spanish verbs again!

Have you noticed how Spanish speakers clearly distinguish between llevar and traer, while in English we often just say “to bring” or “to take”?
If so, you’re not alone! This is a very common source of confusion for Spanish learners — but don’t worry. At Carmen Vega Spanish School, we’ll show you how to tell them apart once and for all 😄

🌎 The Logic of Movement: From Here to There or From There to Here

To understand the difference, you simply need to think about the point of reference.

Llevar

Llevar means to take or carry something away from where you are.

👉 You’re moving something to another place.

Examples:

  • Voy a llevar mi computadora al trabajo.
→ I’m going to take my laptop to work.
  • Lleva a tu hermano al médico.
→ Take your brother to the doctor.

Traer

Traer, on the other hand, means to bring something toward where you are or toward the person you’re speaking to.

👉 You’re moving something to here.

Examples:

  • ¿Puedes traerme un vaso de agua?
→ Can you bring me a glass of water?
  • Voy a traer mi guitarra a la fiesta.
→ I’m going to bring my guitar to the party (where I’ll be).

👣 A Simple Trick to Stop Hesitating

🧠 Tip: Always think about the direction of the movement!

  • Moving away from where you arellevar
  • Moving toward where you are (or toward your listener) → traer

💬 A Simple Example

Imagine you’re at Carmen Vega Spanish School in Cochabamba:

  • If you tell a friend at home:
Voy a llevar mi cuaderno a la escuela,
you’re taking your notebook to the school.
  • But if your teacher says:
¿Puedes traer tu cuaderno a clase?
they’re asking you to bring it here, to the classroom.
